I forgot about a very early work by Hugo which I just found a few days ago
and have not had time to read yet.

In 1818, when Hugo was 16 years old, he made a bet that he could produce a
two volume novel in two weeks: the result was _Bug Jargal,_ dealing with a
slave revolt in Santo Domingo in 1791. In 1825 he found out (according to the
prefaces) that it was going to be reprinted without his permission and
concluded the best way of dealing with this prospect would be to publish a
revised and corrected authorized edition, which I assume is what I have in an
American reprint. (Philadelphia: Rittenhouse, 1894; bound with _Last Days of
a Condemned_ and _Claude Gueux,_ Vol. I of Victor Hugo's Novels, translated
by "Eugenia De B.")

As I said already, I only got this a few days ago and have not had time to
actually read it yet, and so can't make any comment. I would expect it would
be worth doing something with eventually, if only for historical interest
because it is such an early work.
