Norm--

One problem area is the narrative of Prince Dakkar's life in III xvi, which
Kingston, in Butcher's phrase, has "ideologically skewed"--i.e., he has
soft-pedaled Verne's criticism of British control in India. Oddly, one
recent reprint of the Kingston text presents a revised and accurate
translation of this passage--a Barnes & Noble omnibus volume (containing
20K, MI, JCE, and AW80D). Nowhere in this edition is an explanation, or even
acknowledgement, given for this change to Kingston, nor are any copyright
claims asserted for the text. So this "Mysterious Island" is exceptionally
mysterious--but it will supply you with a responsible rendering of this
important passage. Amazon gives the book this number: ASIN: 1566195365.

Rick Walter,
Houston
