Christian,

To have all four versions together will be hugely important. And your
method of aligning text by using table cells, and displaying variations
by highlighting in bold, puts many researchers (and the Canadian
Hansard, as just one example) to shame.

Hoping you can continue the good work!

Bill

Subject: La journée d'un journaliste américaine

There are four versions of this short story:

1) "In the Year 2889", written by Michel Verne, appeared in "The Forum"
in 1889.

2) "La journée d'un journaliste américain en 2890", written by Jules
Verne, appeared in "Mémoires de l'Académie d'Amiens" in 1890.

3) Idem, with minor differences, appeared in "Petit Journal" in 1891.

4) "Au XXIXe. siècle: la journée d'un journaliste américain en 2889",
revised by Michel Verne, appeared in "Hier et Demain" in 1910.

Surfing the Internet I was able to find [1], [2], and [3]; now there are
copies of these texts (and my Spanish translations of them) on my
website (www.geocities.com/chvsanchez/verne/verne.html).

Unfortunately, the man who typed "In the Year 2889" into the computer
made minor corrections to the text as he saw fit. He told me: "Verne's
English grammar was less than perfect; his shifting tenses were
particularly annoying."

So I plead the forum members who have the original text [1] to scan it
and send the images to me; I will do the rest.

Likewise, those who have [4] can contribute the same way, so the work of
comparing [2], [3], and [4] will be finished. (For now, you will find
the differences between [2] and [3] at
www.geocities.com/chvsanchez/verne/comparaf.html.)

I look forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

Christian Sánchez
