The Stephen White xlation should be available on its own right. The JV encyclopedia gives it high praise, is spite of its apparent cuts. There is also a Stephen White xlation of Around the world in 80 days which deserves preservation as well as one by Malleson. By 2005 the goal should be to have all of JV's PD xlations on the internet and then we can all take a whiff of oxygen along with Barbicaine et al.

The white on black version can be converted to black on white with a scanner which can then be OCR'd, if quality is reasonable. PG is now in the process of collecting an archive of scanned images as well as the OCR text. This makes later corrections more reliable than throwing out the scans. Can also do the illustrations.

Also if anyone has an early Hetzel with good illustrations and lives near San Francisco, PG now has access to a planetary scanner which can do scanned images without touching the page or flattening the book.

PG with its new high speed scanner and distributed proofreaders is processing 200-300 books per week now. They are up to 7000 now and should pass 10000 some time early this year. (They need loose pages or a sacrificial book). I can do the scans or send them to DP. Best to keep your mits on the original. I think Art Evans may have a copy he could loan? Or a high speed xerox at .04 a page is only $8.

  Norman and Zvi,
Does the 1876 Steven White translation of the Mysterious Island deserve to be on Project Gutenberg or in Zvi's Virtual Library on its own merits? The version which I have is not a scanned one. It consists of 200 pages (100 double sided loose sheets) each side double columned with white letters on a black background. Shall I send a copy to Norman for the souped up xlation project and/or a copy to Zvi?
