Robert,
I am familiar with a Yiddish translation of Verne's "The Mysterious
Island" published in 1922 by the Hebrew Publishing Company of New York. I
made a copy on loose sheets which I have somewhere in my attic. It is a
Yiddish translation of Kingston's English translation. By a miracle, the
original copy of this book may still be in a little local New York City
library located at the corner of East Broadway and Jefferson Street. You
should have written to me back in 1936 because I have a vague recollection of
having passed the Hebrew Publishing Company building many times. It was a
five or six story building and since it towered over the other buildings in
the neighborhood, its name was painted on the side. I think the title page
of my book gave the address as Eldridge Street.
The Hebrew Publishing Company in no longer in Manhattan. It may be
somewhere in the Queens borough of New York City. Also, the Library of
Congress in Washington may have some lead for you because I think they have a
record of my Yiddish book. Please let me know if you would like me to
research this further for you and I will be glad to help you.
Sid Kravitz.
