A first look at both volumes, the French edition of Le Sphinx des glaces
(Livre de poche, which is the exact copy of the Hetzel editions) and at the
Cashel Hoey translation An Antarctic Mystery
was a confirmation of what Brian says:

Le Sphinx des glaces is a novel in TWO volumes with 16 chapters each, total
32 chapters. An Antarctic Mystery is in one part only, with total 24
chapters. In the Mystery, the 16 first chapters correspond to the 16
chapters of volume 1 of the Sphinx. The chapter titles are the same and I
didn't check if there were some cuttings in the translation. But the drama
begins with the Mystery's chapter 17... The 16 chapters of vol. 2 of the
Sphinx have been reduced to the 8 last chapters of the Mystery. The
beginning (2-3 pages) of chapter 1 of part 2 of the Sphinx is missing in
chapter 17 of the Mystery, and so on...

Why the first part of the Sphinx seems to be well translated, and the
second part just cut in half?
