good people of the list serve:

i read thrpough the first couple of chapters of the volume in question and
here's a short synopsis:

intro: the initial narrator is wandering around in south texas and mexico
with a french hunter who is not named. the two wander out into a
wilderness area, and start discussing immigration to the americas and the
motives for such. at this point, the hunter notes that most europeans have
come to the americas in order to serarch for gold. he then begins to tell
a story (and becomes the narrator).

chapt. 1. the gold market - a short and informal history of the gold rush
in the americas, specifically in california, then in mexico. thewn the
narrator begins to discuss the practices of gold miners in mexico, how they
have developed a market (der gold mark) through which they might exchange
go0lod for services and also gamble with the gold. The tale then focuses
in on a specific instance of a game of chance between one Lukas and a
Senyor Kasares. this is as far as i have gotten, though it may be helpful
to tell you that the next chapter is called, "Don Silva de Tores."

related matters: please forgive me for not stating this earlier, but i
work for the main library at u.c. berkeley as the judaica cataloger, and
have checked the records available to me (to include both library of
congress and oclc). sadly, the records are all quite old, being
transcriptions (at best) of what was on library cards at certain
institutions. old records like this are often in this condition (that is
to say, spotty, haphazard, and irregular) and can sometimes be quite
daunting, though 99% of these situations can be handled in house. this
case, however, requires so much more as i'm certain you kind folks have noted.

as for the odd titles in the contents notes: these are translations of the
yiddish titles of the works. i can't explain why these books have been
titles they way that they were, but that's the nut that has to be cracked.

the set: these books are readily available in numerous libraries, and can
still be purchased with ease if one is so inclined. a while back i ordered
the complete set (12 vols.) from the national yiddish book center in
amherst, mass. they sent me originals of four of the volumes, and will be
sending the remainder as reprints (they scan yiddish books onto disc, then
reprint as requested; it's a great service).

other: i just have to say that the editing is somewhat less than desirable;
 misspellings are common, and the orthography in general is very, very
germanic (making it harder to use the dictionary) and often quite fanciful.
 linguistically, it's a great joy, but technically it's a pain in the rear.
also, thank you very much for the response to my query. you have all been
very accomodating.
