Hi,

Was the use of footnotes common in 19th century fiction? I'm aware that
Walter Scott used them in his historical romances, and Poe used them for his "hoax"
fiction/non-fiction. Was Verne building on these predecessors, or was he
simply following an accepted convention?

Best,
Mike
