Jean-Jules Verne reports in his biography of JV that in 1879 the Saint-Michel
III "was almost lost when a three-master collided with her in a gale while at
anchor off Saint-Nazaire. The bowsprit and the bow were smashed...." But a
few lines later he says: "Fortunately, however, the damage was not serious."
In any event, this seems to pre-date the various measurements you've
discovered.
