I have posted the comparison files of part 3 chaps 15 and 16
on http://www.kreative.net/boater/verne/, files compare15.doc and compare16.doc. I have hilighted in yellow suspect parts of Kingston's translation. Also show White eliminated much of the "padding". Will go on eventually with the next chapter which also shouldlbe suspect. Let me know of other "bad" chapters of Kingston. MSword files unfortunately, conversion to html failed.

     I have not really read the White translation cover to cover, certainly not the way I have read the Kingston translation. One reason for this is that I was was not aware of the existence of the White translation until a later time. My impression is that White was more accurate (without giving it a second thought) and that Kingston felt free to alter the translation (without giving it a second thought).
      There is nothing mysterious about the 30,000 fewer words in the White version. I remember telling myself when I looked over the White translation that he began to omit material toward the end (as if he were tiring of the task).
      I should read the White translation carefully. I'll try to read a chapter a day.
