Garmt deVries has raised the subject of Verne's portrayal of the Jew, Isaac
Hakhabut. This reminds me that I was never comfortable with Verne's
portrayal of the Negro Neb in "The Mysterious Island." Sid.
This is by far below of the ordinary racism of the time of JV!  Nab was a Black man and a servant, not a slave. In equivalent novels of this time, Black men received no better treatments than animals, for example they were thrown away from the nacelle of a balloon to save weight etc ... Conversely, in "Un capitaine de 15 ans", Hercule and his friend are portrayed with very positive traits.
