Good evening to all,

I'm new to this forum, so I'm making apologies ahead if I'm not in the right group for this subject, but I was wondering:
I'm a Belgian, I've read J. Verne both in English as in Dutch, and in both versions the lead characters in most books are English!
Now that struck me as weird as mr. Verne was offcourse French.

Phileas Fog was as british as tea with milk, and I do believe the scientist in '20'000 leagues' was too (though his assistant was, oh yes, flemish ^^ )
And I am certain captain Nemo was suggested to be sinking British ships...

My question is simple: why?
Why are his characters not french? Or am I wrong and are these characters exceptions?

regarding,
-Lieven

PS: I started thinking about it after seeing the abominable movie 'The League of extraordinary gentlemen' Really, one shouldn't mess with a person's icons and favourite submarine captains. Captain Nemo as worshipper of Kali? A sword expert and a man 'repenting his former misdeeds'??
A nautilus with solar panels and the interior of an emir's palace??? I haven't been irritated as much by a movie in years!!!
