I have an additional bit of evidence to support Garmt's theory that Flip
Island is located at 50 N latitude 170 E longitude. Chapter 2 states that the
engineer Harry Clifton worked to improve the approaches to the Amour. The 1980
edition of Petit Larousse Illustré, page 1117, gives this information:
AMOUR: du nord-est de l'Asie. formé par la réunion de l'Argoun et de la
Chika. Il sépare la Sibérie de la Chine du Nord-Est et se jette dans la mer
d'Okhotsk. 4354 km.
If the Clifton family boarded the Vancouver at the mouth of the Amour (52 N
140E) and if the captain followed a great circle route to San Francisco but was
driven northward by the weather then 50N 170E is a reasonable guess. Flip
Island could then be associated with the Aleutian chain of islands. [During
rough weather, the Vancouver is steered with the staysail and its two topsails
lowered. No mention is made of steam.]
