As descendant of Scots, I agree with Ian Thompson that it is gratifying to
have Verne's Scottish characters mainly in positive roles. Can we ascribe to
Verne the origin of the stereotype of the Scottish engineer in Science Fiction,
culminating in Scotty "The engines are goin' tae blow, Cap'n" on Star Trek?
I don't know if Verne specifies, but I think of Tom Turner, Robur's
sidekick, as a Scot, too. In fact, it seems reasonable to me that Robur
originally worked for Nemo at X-Island. That X-island is not the same place as the
Mysterious Island, and the Albatross, if not the Terror, was built there.
I enjoy the use of the Alsatian in Begum's Fortune, and the French
mathematician who disputes the calculations of mastoninPurchase of the North
Pole. David McCallister
