I think it's right, but I have in my collection a copy of the first german traduction of "Begum" (Hartleben, published for the first time in 1879 and quite good with only a few omissions) which was lent in the ... SS-Library of Vienna. Hard to explain, but a fact.

That's a good question, and I think it's a possible explanation for Michel's choice. Unfortunately, the film has not yet be found and searching commentaries in the newspapers is hard to realize...
