1) Petition Jetix
On January 1st 2005, Fox Kids (which is transmitted on the Sky Digital
platform) will change it's name to Jetix. This channel has in the last
several months been broadcasting "Ulysses 31" which was first transmitted in
Japan in the early 1980's and then in the UK in the late 1980's. When it was
broadcast in the UK, it formed part of Children's BBC and was the latest in
a selection of cartoons based (or influenced by) books. Ulysses 31 was a
31st century version of Homer's Odyssey, "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" was
based on the legends of the Mayan Cities of Gold and "Around the World with
Willy Fog" (well, I think you can guess what that was based on!)
Presenting from left to right Willy Fog (Phileas Fogg), Rigadon
(Passepartout) and Tico, Princess Romy (Aouda) and Inspector Dix (Inspector
Fix) and Constable Bully
What I am proposing is e-mailing Jetix at info~at~jetixeurope.net and asking if
they have any plans to show either series of Willy Fog (as there were two
made encapsulating "Around the World in Eighty Days", "Journey to the Centre
of the Earth" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea") during Verne's centenary
year
2) Lobby BRB Internacional
The people responsible for Willy Fog are BRB Internacional of Spain, and
with the 40th anniversary of the first manned moon landing in 2009 rapidly
approaching I am considering the option of writing to their headquarters in
Spain and suggesting that they commission a third series of Willy Fog based
on "Journey to the Moon and Back" (especially as in the title sequence of
the second series has a great big close up of the moon).
3) Fund raising based on Verne's journeys
Following the tidal wave on Boxing Day, this I think has the best potential
for a celebration of Jules Verne. The journey I am thinking about (as it is
the most practical and doesn't involve too much in the way of planning) is
an surface travel version of "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" in the
same timescale. By this I mean that the journey would start on the summit of
the Snaefells Volcano at sunrise on July 1st 2005 (2.55am Iceland time) and
end at Stromboli before midnight on August 29th. During the journey, our
very own Lindenbrock and company would be challenged to do various things
based on the area they are travelling through (so for Iceland it would be
something like taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon, in the Shetland Islands it
would be to do some fishing) and so on. Part of the fund raising would be
asking the companies who supply the method of transport to donate the cost
of that trip to a central fund as well as collecting donations along the
route.
Those are my three suggestions and I would like to know what people think of
them.
