Dear friends,

I consulted two (1890s and 1950s) Czech translations which I have in hand and found that they both dealt with the sentence the same way as Kingston ("Sand, stones, twisted branches, wet clay, closed up the galleries open to the south winds."). So the translators comprehended it well, but perhaps thought it a bit confusing for readers or impairing its continuity and thus made this acceptable change. It is pleasuring to know that the modern English translators approach Verne with utmost justice to his writing (which is definitely not the case of our most recent translations...). Glory be to them!

Sincerely

Jan Rychlik
