Dear Garmt,

The LAROUSSE DU XIXe SIECLE also uses "La Landelle, Gabriel de" and
this listing seems to be preferrable, because who would ever look for
"La Fontaine, Jean de" as "Fontaine, Jean de la" or "La Boëtie,
Etienne de" as "Boëtie, Etienne de la". I think this is because
"La" as the French article is so frequent in French names and is
considered to be an undetachable part, whether or not it is
graphically written as a stand-alone unit (there is also
"Lafontaine, Louis de" besides "La Fontaine, Jean de").
Not to forget the masculine counterpart: "DE + LE = DU" (Dupont, Duval...)
where no separation is possible at all.

Here, I would follow the French structure, because that is how
famous names cross the linguistic barrier. So the fables have
been written by "La Fontaine" and not just "Fontaine". Or as
can be seen e.g. from the famous Brassens song:

"C'était pas des amis choisis
Par Montaigne et La Boëtie"...

(The family name is not "Boëtie").
