That's what we would do.

I think you're right there. It's telling that "La" is often capitalised
even in "Jean de La Fontaine".

For the sake of confusion/completeness (pick what you like), what do you
think of a name like "Honorine du Fraysne de Viane"? Would you refer to
the family name as "Fraysne de Viane", and list her as "Fraysne de Viane,
Honorine du"?

The choice is between following the Dutch convention of putting all the
small words at the end, and the French convention. At the moment, it's the
French convention that I'm trying to get cleared up, I'll make that choice
later (or the editor will do it for me).
