Dear friends,
On a Dutch auction website, a coin was offered, showing a portrait of JV
and an illustration of (probably) the Great Eastern. The seller sent me
the two images I attached to this mail, they're photos made with a
cellphone.
The seller claims that the coins was issued in the Netherlands. Its weight
is 25 g, its diameter 40 mm. It's made of gilded copper/nickel.
A few points bother me. On both sides of the coin, one can see a French
text ("1867. Voyage en Amerique sur le Great Eastern" and "... monde de
demain"). This would be odd for a Dutch coin. I asked the seller when the
coin was issued, but he could only tell me that he had bought it "around
1990". Yet in his description he says that there is a certificate with
this object.
I have the feeling that it may in fact be a French or Canadian coin, not
Dutch.
If any of you recognizes this coin, I would be happy to get some more
information on it.
Cheers,
Garmt.
