Dear Ian,

That will be great. It is interesting to know what Verne pinpointed in his review and how this reflected in L’Ile mystérieuse.

Meanwhile, I was able to discover that Louis Cortambert was a brother of geographer Richard Cortambert (whom Verne cites in Les Enfants du capitaine Grant). Louis settled in the USA in 1833 and became prominent person of French press in America. In collaboration with M. de Tranaltos, he wrote the book reviewed by Verne, as well as a biography of General Grant (1868), both publications destined to French Americans. (So the Paris 1867 edition reviewed by Verne was perhaps simultaneously published.)

Sincerely

Jan Rychlik
