A good deal of information about the sloughi/saluki on the web, for

Right. According to the first reference above, "the Sloughi's native
countries are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya," and a "French law" is
mentioned that banned their use in hunting during the 19th century.

For what it's worth, a Russian version of the book, "Dva goda kanikul,"
published in 1994 (date of the translation and translator not listed) always
refers to "Sloughi"--written in the Latin alphabet! No attempt at
translation of meaning or even transcription of sound.
