This reminds me the Beau Danube Jaune. But in that novel werner Verne occasionaly tries to plant the story on the geography, the result being grotesque. So Bombarnac is not that bad since not to use geography in the plot is far better than misuse it. Actually, there is a span of a decade between the two novels.
