Dear all,

here is the chronology of LE TOUR DU MONDE EN QUATRE-VINGTS JOURS:

1) end of 1871. Jules Verne has the idea of writing a piece together with Edouard Cadol, a friend of his own friend Larochelle, director of the Cluny theatre, Paris. He choses Captain Hatteras, but the proposition ist rejected by several theatre directors
2) beginning of 1872: he choses the plot what will be LE TOUR DU MONDE and develops the scenario together with Cadol. Verne claims the authorship of the characters, the plot and the ending
3) While Cadol writes a first version of the play after notes Verne sends him notes and propositions of details we don't know and is correction Cadol's scenes, Jules Verne begins inthe end of march writing the novel. He is allowed to bring parts of the play in dialogues of his book.
4) In june, the first version, more or less elaborated of the play is rejected by theatre directors. Cadol undertakes up to spring 1873 wrinting a second, condensed version.
5) In june/july, the first version of the novel is written (ms. in Nantes Library), Verne begins writing the revised version up to october (ms. in Bibliotheque nationale). There is no trace at all of Cadol's handwriting in the two manuscripts of Verne.
6) november/december: the novel is published in "Le Temps". Some newspaper announce that the Cadol play will be shown on the Cluny theatre in spring.
7) This second version (which is the text published in the Bulletin de la Socété Jules Verne) is rejected by Larochelle. For the announced play, Larochelle stages in april the Verne/Wallut play UN NEVEU D'AMÉRIQUE, revised by Cadol. Cadol allows his friend Emile de Najac to write a third play based on this second version for american stage which Najac will offer to directors on his US-trip in summer
8) Meanwhile, Larochelle, who wants to play LE TOUR DU MONDE, has connected Verne with d'Ennery, authorized by Cadol who thinks that he will stay co-author. But Larochelle wants a entirely new play.
9) The New York directors reject the Najac version because rumours say that Verne will write a new version of the play with the highly famous d'Ennery. Vadol begins feeling sad.
10) In winter 1873/74 Verne collaborates with d'Ennery at Antibes in developing a new scenario for the play. Cadol who has been excluded, writes two polemical letters in november to the Figaro where he don't claims authorship of the novel, but pretends that Verne has used his text of the play. However, it has been arranged that he will get half of the stage income of Verne's.
11) The new play is written at Antibes by Verne and d'Ennery in summer 1874 and staged on november 7 on the thatre de la Porte Saint-Martin.
A more detailed article with the letters of Cadol and Verne will be published in the Verne no. of AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF FRENCH STUDIES (vol. 42 no. 3), September-October 2005, but written in french!

As for L'ÉPAVE DU CYNTHIA, the whole manuscript of André Laurie (Paschal Grousset) in his handwriting is in the Paris Bibliothèque nationale, NAF 16956 (microfilm 424). As it has been suggested, Verne made his correction on proofs. A good article has been published on the modifications of Verne by Xavier Noel: "L'Épave du Cynthia d'André Laurie et de Jules Verne: contribution respective des deux auteurs" in: CAHIERS DU MUSée JULES VERNE (Nantes) no. 4, 1994, pp. 15-64
