Zvi has kindly archived my map of Malta to accompany the two postings that I put on the Forum recently. The map shows Il Prajet Bay where Verne anchored for safety from the easterly gale and put Paul and Maurice ashore less than three kilometres from Mellieha where they were arrested and held in the police station. The bay is the same one mentioned in Mathias Sandorf which Antekirt describes as resembling Fingal's Cave (Le Rayon Vert) in Scotland. Although Verne (and Antékirtt) refers to it as Mellieha Bay, this is incorrect.Mellieha Bay is a broad open bay with no resemblance to Fingal's Cave and would have offered no protection from the easterly wind. Il Prajet is the narrow creek from which Luigi Ferrato sails to the rescue of Antékirtt (having taken refuge there himself) and then pilots him through the North Comino Channel and on to Valetta...the same route followed by Verne after having had to abandon Paul due to a change in the wind which would have forced the St Michel III on to the rocks. Whereas Antékirtt is guided from Il Prajet to Valetta, Verne is not guided into that port until a pilot boards the St M. off Valetta where repairs are carried out to the yacht.
