Thanks, Ralf, for all of the excellent points you have made! I can see where my description was much too simplistic. But I think I meant something fairly simple, too. I noticed, for instance, that Verne wrote in fairly short, simple sentences and I tried to retain that character since it affected the "sound" and cadence of the story. I also tried to retain the rather stilted delivery and vocabulary, since it is certainly part of the Victorian "feel" of the book. I think I meant nothing more than those qualities. I suppose what I was trying to do was produce what Mercier would have done a century ago if he had not been so incompetent.

I do need to repeat, however, that I never intended to denigrate anyone else's version of the book, but was only trying to point out some of the differences. If (perhaps because of my background in advertising) I overstated the case, I again apologize. But I do want to reemphasize the fact that, at the time of its original publication, the Unicorn Press edition was the most complete and error-free (typos notwithstanding) English version of the book available. It has been superceded in both of these respects, of course, but I don't think that makes it any less interesting or valuable.
