I think that is the most practical solution.

You could put up a form where new members can add their personal details,
if they wish. When someone subscribes, you could automatically send a
message with a link to that form, asking if they would like to complete
it.

You can create a file containing all the locations, which can be read by
Google Maps. I think it's called KML (too lazy to check). At any rate,
it's XML-based, and you can generate it on the fly based on your database
of members.
