Google Earth itineraries

Dear friends,

Inspired by a recent discussion in Frederic Viron's Portail Jules Verne
(http://www.fredericviron.com/verne/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=874&forum=1),
and by the memory of a similar discussion we once had in the JVF, I
finally took some time to create KML files from the data of my interactive
maps of itineraries of the voyages extraordinaires.

At http://www.phys.uu.nl/~gdevries/voyages/google.html, you'll find links
to KML files for each of Verne's stories (at least for those where a
geographic location is given). The KML is created on the fly from the
data. This way, I will only have to make updates in one place.

There are a few issues to be resolved, which mainly concern the precision
of the coordinates. I had determined all coordinates to 0.01 degree
accuracy, which was fine for my own interactive map with limited
resolution, but it's insufficient for Google Earth, which now shows ships
travelling over land, trains travelling over sea, and cities located miles
away from their true locations. I will fix all this in due time. Google
Earth will help me find the exact locations, with a precision of 0.01
arcsecond.

Another improvement will be to include more toponyms. For stories taking
place within a small region, e.g. P'tit-Bonhomme, I could only label a few
places, if I didn't want to clutter my map. But in Google Earth I don't
have that problem.

I will have to go through all the books again, and add more data to my
database. This will take some time, but in the meantime you're welcome to
enjoy the itineraries in their current rough form.

Cheers,
Garmt.
