To fully appreciate the situation, we have to take into account that Henri
Garcet and Joseph Bertrand were colleagues and presumably close friends. Both
were professors of mathematics at Lycée Napoléon (now named "Lycée Henri IV").
Garcet and Bertrand collaborated for the edition of the "Traité d'algèbre" of
Bertrand (1863).

So I surmise that Jules Verne was not directly in relation with Bertrand, but
through the intermediary of Garcet.
