I have found the malevolent spirit that has been plaguing my trip and would
you believe it, it's English? As you will recall yesterday, I felt sure that
following the incidents on the train to Paris, in Paris itself and
yesterday's attempt on my life were all being performed by someone to stop
my trip around the world in eighty days and today I have proof of it. Well,
I say I have proof it was actually Passepartout who found it.
He was wandering around on deck this morning when he bumped into a gentleman
he recognised from his shopping trip in Suez. He introduced himself as Mr.
Fix, an agent of the Peninsular Company who I believe are considering taking
over the Oriental Company at some time in the near future. The thing is
though that according to Passepartout's report of the meeting, he seemed to
know only the basics of India and seemed far more interested in my journey.
This I have to say is more than a little suspicious. So I consulted this box
of tricks and from out of nowhere something resembling a camera appeared. I
gave it to Passepartout and told him to see if he could take a picture of
this "Mr. Fix", but to be very careful. Well, Passepartout has done me proud
again. He not only found Mr. Fix but also took a picture. Now, it's not the
best picture ever taken I grant you, but it's very useful indeed.
According to Passepartout, Mr. Fix is bound for Bombay just like us to
rejoin some of his colleagues there. Therefore, if I see him again in
Calcutta (which is on the other side of India) I will know that he is up to
something and that that something involves anything that will lead to the
demise of this trip.
