Dear Vernian friends,
It wasn’t worth the wait! I join Bernhard, Peter Harold and my good and old
friend Jean-Pierre Picot in finding very little that is new on the Estelle
affair in BSJV no. 159. Publicist Jean-Pierre Boutin (below) told us to
expect “reported facts”. But there is page after page of pure speculation
about why an unidentified photo of a woman was found in Nadar’s copy of Cinq
semaines. It is useful to have Estelle’s date of birth and movements. But
since nobody else has tried to establish Verne’s residences in the 1860s
(!), it’s not easy to use this information. Much of these articles reads
like the Da Vinci Code crossed with Bernard Frank: anagrams based on a few
letters in common; coincidences of dates as primary biographical evidence;
and farfetched interpretations of the works as further primary evidence. I
noticed more than three errors on p. 6 alone. A rather impertinent remark by
Boutin below suggested that as a result of the new facts, my biography
needed changing. I am glad to report that I have followed his advice, up to
a point, and added a few words to one of the endnotes. In sum, the
“sensation” was one of those “intellectual scoops”: good on style but
vanishingly poor on substance. The BSJV needs a major editorial shake-up – I
notice that many of the big names do not contribute to it very often, which
is a shame…

Subject: Amazing news coming soon ...
Chers amis, (see below for an English translation)
Jean-Pierre
Dear friends,
Last Saturday took place the annual meeting of the Société Jules Verne that
was very interesting because of the thrilling lectures, which were made on
that occasion. Two of them, in particular, related to certain absolutely
unknown and amazing aspects of the private life of Jules Verne that were
unravelled by a long and meticulous research work and supported by a
literary analysis of JV’s novels. The reported facts constitute a coherent
body of circumstantial evidences (for the moment…) that allow to put forward
new assumptions on the life of JV but …sorry … I would not say anything
more. These lectures, like others papers quite as interesting, will be
published in next Bulletins of the Société Jules Verne (in the October issue
for the lectures). To have this information as soon as published, the best
way is to adhere to the Société Jules Verne!
The promotion for adhesions is the main the object of this message but the
announced events are quite real (it’s not an April Fool’s joke Garmt!).
Will, I am afraid, you will have to revise the title of your JV biography; I
don’t doubt that it is very interesting (I ordered it but not received yet)
but I find the title somewhat … imprudent…
Best regards,
Jean-Pierre
