Dear friends,

I have been wondering for a while where Verne found the text of the
"Pihe", the Maori hymn that he cites in Les Enfants du capitaine Grant:

papa ra ti wati tidi
i dounga nei...

The words don't look as if he made them up, but some New-Zealanders that I
consulted told me that some words don't sound Maori at all. A Brazilian
newspaper from the early 20th century also cites the hymn, in exactly the
same words. Had the author read Grant, or did he use the same source as
Verne?

Now in the latest BSJV, several source for the New-Zealand volume of Grant
are mentioned. One of them is "Le voyage pittoresque autour du Monde" by
Dumont d'Urville (vol. 11, pp. 326--416). Apparently, Dumont d'Urville
writes about the "Pihe", about tabou, and a Maori funeral. I'd be
interested to read this text, but it isn't available in Gallica. Would
anyone have a suggestion where to look? Or if someone owns a copy, could
they check for the text of the "Pihe"?
