Ron,
This "supplementary chapter" is a text by Badoureau, in which all the
calculations on which the novel is based are performed explicitly. This
chapter was only included in Hetzel's in-18 edition, and in various
subsequent reprints (Editions Rencontre, for example). It's great reading
if you're not afraid of a few formulae.
