Research - win some lose some!
If scientific research is based on falsification, one morning in Malta was
a good example.
Before leaving for Malta I had found a web site listing all the streets
world wide named after Jules Verne. To my surprise there was a Triq
(Maltese for Street)Jules Verne in Naxxar, one of the oldest and most
traditional villages on the island. Hypothesising a possible highly
significant connection with Verne I set off to explore. After hunting for
over an hour I could not find the street as indicated on my map, but had
found Sir Walter Scott, Thackeray, George Sand, Coleridge Streets. It was
a new area of the village and clearly the streets had been named after
famous authors who had visited Malta. I eventually discovered Triq Jules
Verne. There were roadworks in progress and the name plate had been
detached and was lying in a ditch at the side of the road. I restored it
to a place of prominence and photographed it!
A tiring morning in the heat and almost a complete waste of time in terms
of research but a very cold beer in a bar on the village square restored
my spirits and prepared me for an afternoon in the National Library.
