I'm a little surprised that this is considered to be "unknown". I have used
the subscription website (http://www.newspaperarchive.com) as well as others
and seen the title "Jules Verne at Home" a number of times. I didn't
investigate deeply because I figured that this was a syndicated newspaper story
picked up in several locations. Here is an example:

NewspaperArchive tends to have smaller newspapers that the company has
microfilmed in the past. They are scanning and OCRing about 80,000 pages a day
(roughly 1/second). The search interface could be improved and there are many
U.S. states I wish they would cover (ie New Jersey) but it is an interesting
resource.

There are a great number of references to events which seem to parallel Verne's
stories, particularly with submarine boat experiments. It is a rich resource
though I'm sure that some news stories are less credible than others.

Another resource I find useful is the university database called ProQuest which
has images of articles in the historical runs of the NY Times, LA Times, Wall
Street Journal, and Washington Post along with collections of literary
magazines and other interesting tidbits. I don't know if there is a website
where one can subscribe to this as an individual, however, unlike
NewspaperArchive.com.
