Sean,
One of the significant connections between Jules Verne and Fridtjof Nansen
was their common relationship to the Société de Géographie de Paris. Verne
was a member of the Society from 1864-1898 and took a very keen interest
in reports of expeditions and lectures by explorers. In 1897 Nansen was
awarded the Gold Medal for exploration and voyages of discovery. This was
one of the five Grands Prix and was awarded "for a voyage the results of
which have enriched Geography".
I have a copy of the letter that Nansen wrote to Baron Etienne Hulot,
Secretary General of the Society, thanking the Society for this very
prestigious award. The letter is dated 20th May 1897. It is a two page
letter in Nansen's handwriting and is in French. It is signed in a very
bold hand by Nansen.
If you would like a copy of this please let me know.
Ian Thompson, Prof. of Geography, Glasgow University,Scotland.
