Of course it would, but it is a perfect dramatic solution of the plot! No better ending for the story. Within the realms of facts, the exit is irrelevant, since the way underground itself would have been prevented by the glacier on the top of Snaefellsjökull... I feel it is the depth of fantasy that makes the novel one of Verne's best (if not the best one).
