I would like to contribute once more to the theme you've submitted to the Forum. I've just read about a documentary on Gabor Boritt, a prominent U.S. historian of the American Civil War and found to my surprise the following recall: “I made my first acquaintance with American history in an old bookshop during my childhood in Hungary, a copy of Jules Verne’s novel Nord contre Sud.”
