An addition to the list:
William Beebe, an American explorer and Jules Verne fan in June 1930 -
diving experiments (in a steel sphere built by Otis Barton) near the
Bermudas.

French speleologist Edouard Alfred Martel, directly inspired by "Mathias
Sandorf" (and he mentioned this in his scienticic reports and articles)
explored the Gorge of Pazin in 1893, 1896 and 1897. All further explorations
of the undeground caves and lakes system, until the nowdays, directly
proclaim their inspiration with Verne's "Mathias Sandorf" (and the Sandorf's
underground way to the western Istrian coast is still unknown!)
