I've just finished reading the new translation of Verne's original manuscript by Bill Butcher - and comparing it to Cranstoun Metcalfe's translation of Michael Verne's book.

Congratulations to Bill for a well written and engaging translation and thoughtful notes

It is facinating to compare the two editions side by side. The changes that Michael made to the orignial manuscript are curious.

In particular at the climax of the story Michael chooses to shift the decision to relight the Lighthouse to John Davis from Vasquez. Given Vasquez's knowledge of the lighthouse operation and the layout of the building - changing the leadership to John Davis weakens the story !!

But at the very end of the story John Davis joins Vasquez leading a group of sailors to attemtp to capture Congre in Verne's original manuscript , but his name is removed in Michael's version .

For those that have access to the original French text of Michael Verne's book I would be interested to know what changes e Cranstoun Metcalfe introduced

Regards

Chris Moser
