Fwd: [RGParaliteraria] Digest Number 562

This is a digest post from a yahoo Group I belong to. The group (RGParaliteraria) discusses global speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy and horror), ethnic sf, cultural representation in sf, translation and publication of international speculative fiction. It includes as members many professionals, scholars and fans from five continents.

I have not followed the link in message #919 yet (nor the link to the translation software - hey it's still early Monday morning for me), but I thought I'd pass this on.

Cheers,

Rich Gombert

translating Jules Verne

Critic Adam Roberts discusses how Jules Verne has been
translated to English:

"I'd always liked reading Jules Verne and I've read
most of his novels; but it wasn't until recently that
I really understood I hadn't been reading Jules Verne
at all.

"I'll explain what I mean. Verne has been globally
popular since the 19th century, and all his titles
have been translated into English, most of them soon
after their initial publication. But almost all of
them were translated so badly, so mutilated that
'translation' is something of a misnomer."
