Amphibian Man by Alexander Beliaev
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Amphibian Man is perhaps the most well-known novel by Alexander Beliaev, a talented Russian science fiction writer who lived in the early 20th c. First published in 1928.
The book tells a story of a young man named Ichtiandr (literally "Fish Man" in Greek) who as a child received a life-saving transplant - a set of shark gills. The operation was performed by his father, a scientist and a maverick surgeon, in an attempt to save his son's failing lungs. The experiment was a success but it limited the young man's ability to interact with the world outside his ocean environment. Similar to other Beliaev's works, the book investigates the possibilities of physical survival under extreme conditions, as well as the moral integrity of scientific experiments. It also touches on socialist ideas of improving living conditions for the world's poor.
Set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the book also presents an adventurous love story brought in 1962 to the large screen for the entire Soviet Union. The Amphibian Man film (Russian: ???????-a??????, Chelovek-Amphibia), was directed by Vladimir Chebotaryov. In 1962 the movie recorded 65 million ticket sales (the actual ticket revenue is unknown) quickly becoming one of the most admired movies in the USSR. Filmed on the South Coast of the Crimea and featuring a cast of beautiful young actors, the film features some popular song and dance numbers and has certain characteristics of a musical. The first song and the musical theme of the movie - "The Sea Devil" became a hit that was sung well into the 90s.

And, another audio book by a writer named Louis Boussenard. He was a French early sci-fi and adventures writer. Very famous in Russia, but totally unknown in UK or US. The name of the book is "10,000 Years in a Block of Ice".
In this story a prominent marine biologist spend 10,000 years frozen. After being defrosted he have discovered that Earth is dominated and ruled by levitating descendents of Afro-Chinese race with telekinetic powers. He also suspect that his own bungled experiment with coral grows might indirectly be responsible for such a future...."

He was dubbed the French H. Rider Haggard during his lifetime but better known today in Eastern Europe than in Francophone countries. As a measure of his popularity, forty volumes of his collected works were published in Imperial Russia in 1911.
A physician by profession, he travelled throughout the French colonies, especially in Africa. He was drafted during the Franco-Prussian War but soon capitulated to the Prussian soldiers, a bitter experience that could explain a nationalist flavour present in many of his novels. Some of his books demonstrate a certain prejudice against Britons and Americans, a fact which likely contributed to his obscurity and lack of translations in the English-speaking world.
The author's picaresque humour flourished in his earliest books, À travers Australie: Les dix millions de l'Opossum rouge (1879), Le tour du monde d'un gamin de Paris (1880), Les Robinsons de la Guyane (1882), and Aventures périlleuses de trois Français au pays des diamants (1884, set in a mysterious cavern underneath the Victoria Falls).
Boussenard's best-known book, Le Capitaine Casse-Cou (1901), was set at the time of the Boer War. L'île en feu (1898) fictionalized Cuba's struggle for independence. Aspiring to emulate Jules Verne, Boussenard also turned out several sci-fi novels, notably Les secrets de monsieur Synthèse (1888) and Dix mille ans dans un bloc de glace (1890).
Enjoy,
Alex
