In De la Terre à la Lune (Chapter 8), first serialised in December 1865,
Michel Ardan (Nadar) is compared to to "those cariatides which support
balconies on their shoulders". Verne was admitted as a member of the
Société de Géographie de Paris on the 2nd December 1864. The imposing
entry to the Society's building on the Bd. St Germain in Paris is
dominated by large statues of two cariatides ( representing earth and
oceans ) which support the balcony above.See the society's web site for an
image.
It seems to me to be quite likely that this was the inspiration for
Verne's description of Ardan cited above.Although obviously this can never
be proven, the coincidence is very strong.
