Blank1. Juni 1863

Did it work? Ah, yes, I recognise these words. Now where was I? Oh, yes,
introducing myself. As I explained my uncle is Professor Lidenbrock of
Hamburg University and that's the reason why we are in Copenhagen in Denmark
and not our usual Hamburg. Now here I have a problem. My uncle has sworn me
to secrecy as to what we will be doing over the next few weeks (and perhaps
months) but at the same time Doctor Smith seemed to be a man of outstanding
scientific knowledge and would seem very interested in what my uncle is
doing. I shall have to ask him his opinion, so if you will excuse me a
moment.

I have consulted with my uncle and he has consented to me recording our
studies on the express condition that if what we discover actually exists
that that section of this journal will not be published before the year 1900
(which I can agree to as well). So therefore with that sorted out let me
explain why we are in Copenhagen.

It was about a week ago that this all started when my uncle came back from a
shop in our native Hamburg with a book written by Snorre Turlleson. Now I
have to admit I didn't recognise the author either, but according to my
uncle he was a person who was very well in with the princes of Norway who
ruled Iceland back in the 1100's (about 700 years ago). Now this struck me
as just a little odd as although my uncle was very well learned, his sudden
transition to history from geology was highly unusual.
Anyway, he went to open the book and as he did so a piece of parchment fell
to the floor. I natually assumed it was part of the book and so offered to
put it back in the place where it had fallen out but before I could, my
uncle grabbed it and looked at it in amazement. There was something about
this parchment that grabbed his attention. "It must be old Icelandic" he
remarked just as our housekeeper informed us that lunch was being served.
I went and had lunch (a very nice bowl of soup) and expected my uncle to
arrive shortly. However he didn't and our housekeeper said "Something
serious is going to happen!", Little did she know how right she was.
Anyway, you will have to excuse me for the time being. We are just about to
board the Valkyria which will take us to our main destination.
Yep, you've guessed it. Doctor Smith (not content with getting Phileas Fogg
to blog his journey around the world in eighty days) has now got Axel
Lidenbrock to blog about their journey to the centre of the Earth!
