Having chased Verne around Malta, tomorrow I leave for Gibraltar to trace
his visits there. There are some contradictions to examine and in
particular whether the supposed notebook by his nephew Maurice Verne, who
accompanied Verne on the St Michel, is accurate, or even whether it
existed at all. The only reference to this seems to be by Marguerite
Allotte de la Fuye who we know had a vivid imagination. Later biographers
seem to have accepted her version of Verne's visit to Gibraltar without
question and in particular the episode where he was entertained by the
British officers and returned to the St Michel intoxicated. Is there
anyone in the Forum who can testify to the existence of Maurice Verne's
notebook? Is it in the public domain? It contradicts other evidence of
Verne's visit which I hope to elucidate.
