In the past year Kieran O'Driscoll and myself engaged in an effort to find out more about the Verne translators Stephen W. White and Wm Struthers. The results of this investigation were given in a talk at the NAJVS meeting in Akron, Ohio, May 2008. An htm version of the talk is now available on IBIBLIO at the following location:

The Powerpoint show accompanying the talk is also available at :

White was one of the few early literal translators of Verne. He was the only one to accurately depict the end of Mysterious Island with the death of Nemo. His "Tour of the World in 80 Days" was the standard version up to 1900, when Scribners reissued the Towle translation. He was also one of the five identified Victorian translators of Verne to translate out of economic necessity.
White was a railroad man, as was his father. As a former railroad man myself I feel a certain kinship with this early admirer of Verne.
