In Science Fiction Studies Vol 32 part I March 2005 p 105 Art Evans updated his list of translations of Verne. The Stephen White (1876), the Fitzroy Edition (1959) of I.O. Evans, and the Lowell Blair translation, Bantam, 1970 all received the Black Ball. I did some word counting with MS Word to try to compare the Kingston with the White, and did come up with about 15% fewer words in the White in both part I and part II. This was using the online versions at Gutenberg. I had realized that in part II White had shortened some paragraphs and left out some bits like the description of how a sawmill works, but I was surprised to find part I similarly shorter. It would not surprise me that the newspaper publisher would want to condense the book somewhat due to its length and I read somewhere that the French publisher thought the book might never end when it came out in serial form. You might have better insight into how much White left out.

I have also other problems with Evans on 5 weeks in a balloon where he does not give the black ball to the Ward Lock, Rooutledge, or Hutchison.

 Evans has sent me his analysis of the W-L version which he attributes to Malleson, but I haven't had time to go through it yet. Both Kieran and myself are of the opinion that Malleson did not do the translation; it is only attributed to him as it was published in a double volume with his JCE. No publishers attribution however. I found many more bits left out there than in the Appleton version. Malleson published several other known French translations the same year and it seems unlikely that he would have done this one too. Also there are no footnotes or explanatory material in the 5 weeks W-L, so dissimilar from the Malleson JCE.

In his earlier hand-out list he had given the Malleson 5-wks a White Star, which was removed for the SFS article and moved to the Arthur Chambers translation (Dent)
