BlankI seem to remember my uncle saying that this sea was about 30 leagues
in length (104 miles) and that we should easily cross it in a day. Why then,
therefore, have we not sighted land since leaving Port Grauben yesterday,
that's what I would like to know!
"We are not descending as we ought to be," the Professor declares. "We are
losing time, and the fact is, I have not come all this way to take a little
sail upon a pond on a raft." "A little sail???" I thought to myself, "if
this is a little sail, what's a crossing across the Atlantic, skimming a
stone across a puddle of water!" But then he said something that made sense.
As far as we could assess we had followed Arne's route to the letter (well,
almost give or take a few mistakes), therefore there was every chance that
Arne had also crossed this lake, ocean call it what you will. I pondered
this for the rest of the day, the highlight of which was Hans asking for his
salary.
