Dear Cyrus,

Thanks for the very kind words (and for spotting the typo). Hatteras is one
of the all-time greats, which is why I chose to do an edition and
translation. I still regret not incorporating the duel episode etc into the
text, since I do think the earlier, manuscript version is superior. This
book has not sold well, which will limit my choice if I want to do another
OUP volume.

It would of course be a good idea to publish all of the Extraordinary
Journeys in accurate translation. If you were going to do it properly, you
would pay the translator the recommended rates, about US$40 per page, rather
than the pittance most publishers pay. So it would cost about $600,000. But
in fact it's not primarily a financial question, as mainstream publishers do
not in general rely on subsidies and most translators do it more for love
than money.

Dear William Butcher,

Just finished The Adventures of Captain Hatteras. Fantastic.
Gripping. Especially the middle third. A definite page turner. Glad
to see inclusion of deleted ending. A shame Hetzel insisted on the
changes as it does indeed feel anti-climactic after the
"particulars". It would be such a giddy pleasure to read JV
chronologically as I am very surprised by how much of the wonderful
"Romance - Reality" style harkens to this second Voyage.

Hats off on another excellent translation. Fyi, there appears to be
an error bottom of page 60 in 2005 Oxford edition.

Extremely eager to read many more modern English translations of Les
Voyages. If only we could get a massive grant to publish everyone
single one of them via Wesleyan, Bison, Oxford et al.

What kind of budget would this undertaking require?

Regards.

Cyrus
