Norm-- Quick! Please correct "Prof. Arthur Edwards" to "Prof. Arthur B. Evans" in your announcement.

Thanks for the energy you're putting into this!

I havve posted the following comment on the JV Talk Page, don't know if it will gather any replies.
    Need for a new page
This page has many errors, and has been subject to continuous vandalism. Many corrections made in good faith may have in fact introduced more errors. There are many Verne experts who are members of the North American Jules Verne Society, William Butcher and Prof. Arthur Edwards, to name a couple, competent to pass judgment on modifications, and once a definitive page has been established the page should be locked down and mods referred to arbitrators. This page has been denigrated by professional Verne scholars and has reflected unnecessarily on the quality of Wikipedia in general. (Varnesavant (talk) 15:48, 7 April 2009 (UTC))

Another possibillitiy is to attack the problem piecemeal, working on one section at a time. The way a Wikipedia article is structured is there is a general introduction accessed only by editing the entire article, then there are various sections which can be edited separately. Each section can be further subdivided by adding new material, and an index is automatically created from the text itself. Thus it is possible for an article to grow like Topsy. I would be glad to coordinate any sectional changes that may be proposed.

Once a section has been updated, frequent visits to the History page are necessary to see who has been changing it. Often the beagles will add such things as references to other Wikipedia articles by highlighting them, which is OK. Substantive changes need to be monitored however. One could start with the list ov Verne's books which omit the date of French publicatioin.

Much better. The biography section contains a number of mistakes; the articles have very few footnote references; and the bibliographies ignore everything not published in French. But otherwise it's above average. A translation of it would be a great progress - but there is no easy way of deleting the existing English-language articles, as far as I know.

Is the French Wikipedia any better? they have different authors for French Wikipedia. Maybe we could just translate their articles??

german might also be a possibilitiy. I found the Gernan Wikipedia very helpful on the Moon Maps.

It reminds me of the Irish joke: if you were going there, I certainly wouldn't start from here! While Wikipedia is in general a wonderful resource, the Verne section is hopeless. What would need doing, as a minimum, is the following:

Ø scrap the existing biography page

Ø remove the American bias from the Verne pages

Ø take account of the research of the past 40 years, mostly not in English

Ø avoid repeating half-truths, myths, inventions and stereotypes.

While I wish you luck, I'm not optimistic substantial change can be made.

While my computer is bust I have been trying to update some Wikipedia articles. The ones I have been workiing on are Earth to the Moon, Around the Moon, Mysterious Island, Lewis Mercier, Stephen White, W.H.G. Kingston. I have not tried to rewrite everything and some of the articles have grown too long with additional material added in, The wikipedia beagles keep deleting new stuff too so it is an ongoiing process. Also old links disappear and need to be replaced. Let me know if there is anything in particular you think needs to be changed in any of the Wikipedia articles and I will do my best.
